I want to warn you now that this activity was quite messy; the salt stuck to Monkey's hands and a little bit to his clothes and it was all over our table. I didn't care because it was easy to clean up and in my opinion more mess = more fun.
Supplies: Epsom salts, food colouring, peppermint extract, various kitchen tools and/or toys
First, I dyed and scented the Epsom salts. I dumped each bag into a bowl and added the peppermint extract and pink or red food colouring. I left one bag white as well.
Once the colour was all mixed in, I poured the salt back into the bags to store until Monkey was going to play.
It ended up being a few days later that we found some time for Monkey to dive in.
Monkey was a little uncertain at first, and didn't really want to touch the salt. He started off using the spoons to scoop so he could keep his hands clean. But after about two minutes he changed his mind and stuck his hands right in!
He made muffins for me.. Yum!?
See what I mean about the mess?
The bin easily stores the salt and all the toys so he can play it a few more times before I get it all cleaned up. He's already used his construction trucks in the salt.
Once he's done with the activity completely, I'm going to try throwing a handful in the bathtub and see what happens. There isn't too much food colouring in it so I don't think it will stain the bath or the kids. And it will smell delish!!
